The Amazing Kukulkan Nights

Chichen Itza is one of the main archaeological sites of the Mayan Culture, located in the Yucatan peninsula just a couple of hours from the Solaris Resorts in Cancun. The pre-Hispanic city of Chichén Itzá was a ceremonial center for many years and the most outstanding capital of the Mayan Culture. It passed through different periods and influences but its main apogee was in the late classical period (800-1100 AD)

Chichen Itzá

Due to its great importance, it is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 2007 the Temple of Kukulkan, the highest and most representative pyramid of Chichén Itzá, was recognized as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. The Kukulkán Temple worships the god Kukulkán that in Maya means feather Serpent, therefore, you can see decorations in the form of a snake and at the equinoxes and solstices of each year there is an exciting light phenomenon that shows us the enormous astronomical and mathematical knowledge of the Mayans who managed to design the pyramid in a certain way that the sunlight in those days simulates the shape of the feathered serpent sliding down the pyramid. An incredible show that leaves you breathless!

The visiting hours of this majestic archaeological site are from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon so you can spend the whole day there. The entrance has a cost of 64 pesos (around 3 US dollars) for adults and it is free for children under 13, so the little ones won’t have an excuse to miss the trip. Teachers, students and seniors with valid credentials are also free, as well as national and local tourists on Sundays.

noches de Kukulkan

Now, if you think that spending the day at Chichen Itza is great enough, Imagine visiting the archeological site at night! That's right, upon the year 2016, in addition to the common visiting schedule, you have the opportunity to experience the exciting tour through the pyramids at night in the Nights of Kukulkán.

In the Nights of Kukulkan you can visit the archaeological site at night and also to experience a unique show. First there is a 45 minute tour around the main pyramids and then... The show starts! Series of exciting colored light projections on the Kukulkan pyramid that will take you through a complete historical journey where you can watch from the beginning of life with an exciting stellar explosion to the feathered serpent descending the pyramid while it changes colors. As well as the Mayan calendar and much more accompanied by an audio narrative that tells you the story of this fascinating pre-Hispanic city and the Mayan Culture. In front of the main pyramid you will find seats available to enjoy this striking show of lights of approximately 25 minutes, which will transport you to the past and revive in a unique way the splendor of the Mayan civilization.

noches de Kukulkán en Chichen Itzá

Throughout the tour you will have an audio guide included that will provide you with relevant information about the different pyramids and about the site in general so that you do not miss anything and enjoy this experience to the fullest, the explanation is available in several languages. I recommend you to bring headphones with you.

In summer, the schedule is from 8 to 9 at night and in winter from 7 to 8. I also recommend you to arrive 15 minutes before the opening time to be able to win a good place in the entry row. To purchase your tickets you can choose whether to do it online or directly at the ticket office of the archaeological site subject to availability. To make the purchase electronically you must access to nochesdekukulkan.com, fill out a small purchase form and you're done. The cost of the ticket depends on the day of visit, from Monday to Friday 510 pesos (27 US dollars) and on Sundays 255 pesos (14 US dollars).

So, now you know.. If you visit Cancun or the Riviera Maya in the summer or winter months, you can not miss this exciting night experience in Chichen Itza with the stars as the perfect setting and marvel at years of history of an ancestral culture and mysticism represented by a contemporary vision thanks to the technological advances of our era.

We recommend you to take some bug spray with you, as mosquitoes might go out at night, coupled with this as a courtesy to the rest of the audience and not to distract them from this magnificent show, you can take pictures to share the experience with your family and friends, but without the use of flashes. Enjoy the show!
