An innovative project: Fonatur Overpass Improvement

Traffic and Connection in Los Cabos

Mobility is essential for the growth of any city. In a tourist destination like Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, smooth traffic flow is crucial. It benefits both residents and visitors.

To meet this need, state and federal governments have started a big project. They are building an overpass at the Fonatur Roundabout.

The Fonatur Flower

You already know The Fonatur Roundabout in San Jose del Cabo. The Mexican artist Enrique Carbajal González, also called Sebastián, created it.

This artwork represents the logo of the National Tourism Promotion Fund (FONATUR). He has placed similar sculptures in other major tourist destinations in Mexico, including Cancún, Loreto, Ixtapa, and Huatulco.

FONATUR installed the sculpture, named the "Flower of Development," in 1999 to mark its 25th anniversary. Its geometric design symbolizes tourism growth and the identity of Integrated Planned Centers (CIP). Each petal represents one of the five original CIP locations.

Objective, Timeline, and Cost

The goal of this overpass is to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times in one of the busiest areas of the city.

  • Officials expect the project to take one year, starting in May 2025 and finishing by May 2026.
  • The investment exceeds 400 million pesos, funding street improvements and enhanced safety measures.
  • The project includes four central lanes that pass under the roundabout.
  • Planners will implement urban upgrades to protect both pedestrians and drivers.

While this project will not solve all traffic problems in the area, it will make circulation safer and more efficient. It will reduce congestion and enhance the flow between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
