As you may know, and most likely have experienced if you have visited Cancun recently, the mandatory FMM document, or “Multiple Migratory Form,” is still required when entering Mexico. This FMM form can also be filled out and submitted electronically here.

Many travelers fill out the form in person, but we recommend preparing it in advance to make your entry into the country faster and easier. In exciting news, Cancun has recently scrapped the mandatory arrival FMM form and introduced a fast-track entry process for Americans. However, you must first register on an official website. This is great news for those who have had to wait in line for an hour or more to complete paperwork upon arrival and departure. Currently, the registration process is available only in Spanish, but it is expected that an English version will be offered soon.

Instead of carrying around all your vacation paperwork, this portal allows all your vacation information to be uploaded digitally.

Now, tourists visiting Mexico for vacation will not need to fill out any form, whether printed or electronic, and will automatically be granted a residence permit for 180 days. However, there are some exceptions—tourists from Brazil, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela will still have to submit a form and may receive only a 30-day visa.

Mexico welcomes more visitors from the United States than from any other country, with Canada as the runner-up. In 2021, more than 12 million tourists visited Cancun, and millions have already traveled to the Mexican Caribbean this year. With its growing popularity, those numbers are expected to keep climbing.

Streamlining the entry process by eliminating the tourist card will help reduce pressure on already overwhelmed airport staff. Additionally, it will make travel less stressful for tourists and save time. Currently, travelers are advised to arrive at the airport 3-4 hours before their flight, but if predictions hold, the new process could reduce that by an hour. Great news, right?
